Typical! You wait five years for an album and two (well, actually, three*) come along at once. It seems the norm these days to give away your music for free so (armed with a "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" philosophy), I'm making this album free to download. In return, I'm asking folks to write a review of 'You Are Welcome' and I'll post it on this page. Please feel free to email or My Space your own review, should you be moved to do so!
Where to begin. 'You Are Welcome' is quite a mixed bag: some of these tracks were going to be on 'Mountains' before it became a more sensible single album ('Mountain Rescue'), some are songs I could have spent more time on or recorded again and some are just songs looking for a home. The recordings range from 2000-2003, all made on the same 4 track machine I made 'Local Honey' and 'Massacres' on and recorded at home (wherever that was at the time of the particular recording!) The ten tracks here were the most 'complete' of a bunch of 31. The rest were just too sketchy (or embarassing) to put out!
Some of you may recognise 1 or 2 songs here. 'Leave Yer Lovin'...' and 'Save Me' have been played live a few times. The subject matter is pretty varied here, compared to 'Local Honey' and 'Mountain Rescue.' 'Black Clouds' is about the sinking Kursk submarine, 'Winterlong' - conquering anxiety, 'One More For The Road' - alcoholism (hear my friend, Lola Emmanuelli say "fascinating" in the fade out. Two guys were having a fight in Flannery's bar, New York - the background noise on the track - and I secretly recorded it on my minidisc), 'Last Four...' - armageddon... You get an idea of what 'Mountain Rescue' could have wound up like!
Hopefully, the '1 track, continuous play' thing won't put you off. I just like the idea of people listening to albums in the way they're designed - as an experience - and since it's free, it's a small price to pay. Next up is a free download of the long since deleted 'How Massacres Start' EP*.
